• NRHP assessments included screened shovel probes and geomorphological
examinations. The spacing and placement of the probes varied (see individual
site discussions below). The probes were approximately 25 cm to a side and
varied from 30 to 70 cm below present ground surface. All sediments were
screened through quarter inch mesh hardware cloth and all of the holes were
backfilled. Artifacts were recovered from three of the probes at one site.
All of these artifacts were returned to the hole prior to backfilling after it
was decided that the site could be recommended to be not eligible for the
NRHP.
Those portions of the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation
(OAHP) forms requiring updated information as a result of these investigations
have been filled out and are included in Appendix A of this document. NRHP
assessments are now completed for sites that could be impacted by Peabody's
Yoast Coal Mine project as currently proposed.
In addition to correcting site plots on the USGS quadrangle as necessary
for the OAHP forms, the sites were plotted on Peabody's small scale map. This
map is being supplied to Peabody so that they may complete the proposed mine
paperwork filing but is not otherwise distributed by MAC.
Sections about the Effective Environment, Existing Data and Literature
Review and Statement of Objectives are not included in this document due to
its limited scope. These topics are covered by Hand (1980), Johnson et al.
(1980), La Point (1981), Travis (1994) and Wheeler (1979, 1980) among others.
• The appropriate OAHP RP3 (Resource Protection Planning Process) document for
this project is by Grady (1984) although Guthrie et al. (1984) is also
relevant.
Reports on the Yoast mine include Johnson et al. (1980) and Travis
(1994) Reports on nearby mines include Hand (1980) and the Wheeler (1919,
1980). Except for the investigations reported by Travis (1994), these mine
investigation reports included information concerning depth of cultural
deposits and soils information pertinent to the current investigation.
RESULTS
No cultural resources were located during the survey conducted for this
project. The five previously recorded sites were found and all are now
evaluated as not significant and it is recommended that they be considered not
eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. Each site is discussed separately below.
5RT864
This site was recorded as a sparse open lithic scatter consisting of 16
pieces of debitage and a biface fragment (Travis 1994). Current
investigations confirm the sparse nature of the aboriginal artifact scatter.
A newly discovered artifact (tertiary flake) expanded the site boundary to the
south and a projectile point/knife fragment was located (Figure 3). Both of
• these artifacts are white chert (see point/knife illustration with site form
in Appendix A). The projectile point/knife is a medium to large sized corner
5
