Site/Property Reevaluation Form (continued)
5RT867
top 5 cm, is a piece of shatter (angular debris) of black and clear
banded chalcedony. It was returned to the hole prior to backfilling.
Probe #5 depth = 25 cm artifacts = 0
Just west of plowed strip. Dry crumbly structure with very high clay
content. At 20 cm a yellowish clay (probable C horizon) was
encountered. This clay is very compacted and has a massive structure.
Probe #6 depth = 60 cm artifacts = 1
In a plowed strip. Similar to Probe #2. From 20 to 30 cm, a layer of
oxidized sandstone cobbles is encountered. Some charcoal staining is
on the bottom of some of the stones. This appears to be the result of
re-deposition following field preparation and scrub oak burning
upslope. No soil structure noted.
Artifact distribution appears to be strongly influenced by inconsistent and
spotty (differential) deposition. Based on the presence of the mono upslope in the
field, artifacts in the main site area may be the result of re-deposition from the
area of the mono (although no other artifacts were found in its vicinity). In any
event, artifacts are restricted to the surface and upper 10 cm. This vertical
distribution is similar to other sites in the area examined during this project and
is consistent with previous investigations in the area (e.g. Johnson et al. 1980;
Wheeler 1979, 1980). This upper 10 cm of soil appears to be largely the product of
enhanced sediment transport resulting from the nearby agricultural activities.
Based on the general paucity of artifacts, lack of cultural deposition and
extensive disturbance (vegetation clearing, plowing, field preparation, colluvial
action), the site is evaluated as not significant. It is recommended that the site
be considered not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP and no further archaeological
investigations should be necessary.
6. Changes in site condition since the previous site/property recording
none, heavy disturbance, see 5) above
7.
