• probes. Probes in the site were placed in small areas with less slope out of
the scrub oak. Descriptions of each probe are (see site map for locations):
Probe ql depth = 45 cm artifacts = 0
Compacted light brown very clayey ]oam. This A horizon is
approximately 2 cm thick. Structure is loose. B horizon is
reddish yellow brown, with extremely high clay content. Slightly
blocky structure. C horizon yellow clay encountered at 45 cm.
Massive structure.
Probe k2 depth = 45 cm artifacts = 0
Same as above, A horizon 5 cm thick. C horizon at base of hole.
Probe q3 depth = 55 cm artifacts = 0
At the edge of road disturbance. Mixed A and B horizons to 50 cm.
C horizon encountered at that depth.
Based on the general paucity of artifacts (as originally reported), lack
of artifact diversity (as originally reported) and lack of cultural
deposition, the site is evaluated as not significant. It is recommended that
the site be considered not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP and no further
archaeological investigations should be necessary.
RECOMMENDATIONS
• Based on the subsurface and/or surface geomorphological examinations,
sites 5RT864, 5RT867, 5RT869, 5RT870 and 5RT871 are evaluated as not
significant and it is recommended that they be considered not eligible for
inclusion in the NRHP. These recommendations are based on the general paucity
of artifacts, lack of artifact diversity and lack of deposition. The sites
are shallow, limited activity lithic scatters. The results of the study are
consistent with the survey expectations and results of other investigations in
the vicinity. Sites 5RT869 and 5RT870 are outside of any proposed Yoast Mine
disturbance areas.
Survey and NRHP assessment strategies employed during this project were
adequate to discover and evaluate all expected cultural resources. As a
result, further work such as construction monitor is not recommended. It is
finally recommended that archaeological clearance for Peabody's proposed Yoast
Mine be granted.
REFERENCES CITED
Frison, George
1991 Prehistoric Hunters of the High Plains, Second Edition.
• Academic Press, San Diego, California.
15
