• The projectile point/knife fragment is a milky chalcedony with what
appears to have been low, wide side notches (the tangs are missing and it is
possible that the point wad wide corner notches). The base is slightly
constricted and the base is ground through the notches. The artifact is
reworked along the margins and is asymmetrical. The artifact is illustrated
with the form in Appendix A. It most closely resembles Stucky's Type VI
(1974), which he considers a subtype of Type V. Type V points are compared to
Magic Mountain and Apex Complex artifacts dating between 5450 and 2450 BP and
Stucky notes that in southwest Wyoming ,• similar artifacts could date to ca.
700 BP. (citing Sharrock 1966).
During the current investigations, artifacts were only observed along
the two-track. It appears that any artifacts previously observed below this
road are the result of slope wash.
Based on the site's location on a slope and examination of the cutbank
along the two-track, little to no deposition is present. Only a thin mantle
of colluvium (less than 5 cm) overlies a horizon consisting largely of
decomposing shale and clay (regolith). Similar deposition is well documented
in the general project area (see descriptions of shovel probes at other sites
during this project; Johnson et al. 1980; Wheeler 1979, 1980).
Based on the general paucity of artifacts and lack of cultural
deposition, the site is evaluated as not significant. It is recommended that
the site be considered not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP and no further
• archaeological investigations should be necessary.
5RT871
This site was recorded as a sparse open lithic scatter consisting of 11
pieces of debitage and one utilized flake (Travis 1994). Current
investigations failed to locate any artifacts, although the site datum was
found and the site was positively identified. The site is located along a
slope between the floodplain and a prepared field (Figure 6). The datum is in
an area cleared of vegetation for a pasture. An old fence line is visible
west of the cleared area and a prepared field is west of the fence line. The
twa-track through the site does not appear to have been a plowed strip but
rather bulldozed through the vegetation thicket.
A scale error was included on the original site map and the site is half
the reported size. No ground visibility is present away from the road in the
scrub oak.
Based on the location on the slope, examination of the erosion and
cutbanks along the two-track, and shovel probes, little to no deposition is
present. Only a thin mantle of A horizon colluvium (less than 5 cm) is
present. Such a situation is well documented in the general project area (see
descriptions of shovel probes at other sites during this project; Johnson et
al. 1980; Wheeler 1979, 1980).
• All of the exposed solum at the site was slightly moist. Erosion faces
along the two-track are very similar to the stratigraphy revealed in the
13
