Probe #2 depth = 35 ~.m artifacts = 0 <br />Lightly compacted brown (slightly darker than exposed in Probe #1) • <br />loam with minor clay content. Small blocky structure. At about <br />25 cm, clay content increases dramatically and structure becomes <br />massive (possible C horizon). Four small sandstone rocks were <br />present. <br />Probe #3 depth = 50 ~:m artifacts = 3 <br />At the edge of a flowed strip between the field and pasture. <br />Dryer than Probe #2 and upper 10 to 15 cm very similar to upper <br />portion of Probe +tl. A few sandstone rocks were present, about <br />half of which werEa oxidized (reddened). At approximately 45 cm, a <br />very high clay content soil was encountered which has a lighter <br />color. Artifacts, limited to the top 10 cm, include: 1) secondary <br />flake fragment, tan chalcedony; 2) tertiary flake, tan chalcedony <br />with small chert inclusions of same color; 3) tertiary flake <br />fragment, clear chalcedony. The artifacts were returned to the <br />hole prior to backfilling. <br />Probe #4 depth = 50 cm artifacts = I <br />Entire exposed solum relatively dry, small blocky structure <br />(crumbly) with less clay than other probes. The artifact, <br />recovered from the top 5 cm, is a piece of shatter (angular <br />debris) of black and clear banded chalcedony. It was returned to <br />the hole prior to backfilling. <br />Probe #5 depth = 25 cm artifacts = 0 • <br />Just west of plowed strip. Dry crumbly structure with very high <br />clay content. At 20 cm a yellowish clay (probable C horizon) was <br />encountered. This clay is very compacted and has a massive <br />structure. <br />Probe #6 depth = 60 cm artifacts = 1 <br />In a plowed strip. Similar to Probe #2. From 20 to 30 cm, a <br />layer of oxidized sandstone cobbles is encountered. Some charcoal <br />staining is on the bottom of some of the stones. This appears to <br />be the result of re-deposition following field preparation and <br />scrub oak burning upslope. No soil structure noted. <br />Artifact distribution appears to be strongly influenced by inconsistent <br />and spotty (differential) deposition. Based on the presence of the mono <br />upslope in the field, artifacts in the main site area may be the result of re- <br />deposition from the area of the mono (although no other artifacts were found <br />in its vicinity). In any event, artifacts are restricted to the surface and <br />upper 10 cm. This vertical distribution is similar to other sites in the area <br />examined during this project and is consistent with previous investigations in <br />the area (e.g. Johnson et al. 1980; Wheeler 1979, 1980}. This upper 10 cm of <br />soil appears to be largely the product of enhanced sediment transport <br />resulting from the nearby agricultural activities. <br />Based on the general paucity of artifacts, lack of cultural deposition <br />and extensive disturbance (vegetation clearing, plowing, field preparation, • <br />10 <br />
