• <br />SOILS INFORMATION <br /> <br />• <br />• <br />• <br />General- Rio Blanco County has not been mapped by the Soil Conservation <br />Service. They are, however, in the process of mapping but it is not <br />scheduled to be complete until 1985. Overburden Soils in the affected Area are <br />of the x-62 Calciorthids - Tridell Complex and are discussed below. <br />X62--Calciorthids-Tridell complex, 6 to 50 percent slopes <br />These moderately sloping to steep soils are on upland and terrace <br />breaks along the White River drainage in the central part of the <br />survey area. They occur at elevations between about 5,800 to 6,900 <br />feet. The average annual precipitation is about 16 inches, and the <br />mean annual air temperature is about 46 degrees F. The Calciorthid <br />soils make up about 55 percent of the mapping unit, and the Tridell <br />soil about 35 percent. These Calciorthid soils are similar to the <br />Tridell soil but differ mainly by having a larger volume of coarse <br />gravel and cobble on the surface and throughout. They also are <br />• <br />shallow to contrasting and/or highly calcareous subsoils. About 10 <br />percent of the unit is inclusions of Work loam, and Zoltay gravelly <br />• <br />clay loam on 3 to 8 percent slopes. <br />The Calciorthid soils are deep, well drained, gravelly and cobbly <br /> <br />soils throughout. They formed in calcareous alluvium and colluvium <br />from mixed parent material of old glacial outwash. They generally <br />occur on slopes greater than 10 percent. <br />• <br />Typically the surface layer is grayish brown mildly to moderately <br />alkaline, gravelly and/or cobbly loams, clay loamy, or sandy loams <br />about 2 to 5 inches thick. The underlying material is moderately to <br />• <br />strongly alkaline pale or light brown highly calcareous very gravelly <br />and cobbly loamy, sandy loams, or loamy sands to depths of 30 inches <br />or more. Permeability is moderate or moderately slow. The effective <br />• <br />rooting depth is 20 inches or more, and the available water capacity <br />is low to moderate. Surface runoff is rapid to medium, and the erosion <br />• <br />hazard is moderate. <br />• <br />
