Muoains. and Nutras
Soil-related factors: (Hayrack and Muggins -high shrink-swell potentiall, slow permeability, steep
slopes in some areas, high soil erosion hazard in the steeper areas, (Muggins and Nutras -
subsurface rock fragments)
Management considerations:
In the steeper areas, reduce soil erosion by disturbing only the part of the site that is used for
construction.
Foundation, concrete structures, and paved areas should be designed to offset the effects of
shrinking and swelling.
Higher construction and maintenance costs should be expected on this unit.
Woodland
Havrack. Muoains. and Nutras
Soil-related factors: steep slopes in some areas, high soil erosion hazard in the steeper areas,
moderate mass movement potential in the steeper areas, root limiting layer
•
Dominant vegetation in the potential plant community: Engelmann spruce - subalpine fir with an
understory of elk sedge, dwarf blueberry, common juniper, kinnikinnick
Annuat production of air-dry understory vegetation: 250 to 500 pounds per acre •
Mean site index for PIEN: 79
Mean site index for ABLA: 69
Management considerations:
To reduce compaction, use suitable methods of harvest, lay out skid trails in advance, and harvest
when the soil is least susceptible to compaction.
Using wheeled or tracked equipment on wet soil produces ruts, compacts the soil, and damages
tree roots.
Steep yarding paths, skid trails, and firebreaks are subject to rill and gully erosion. Plant cover or
water bars are needed.
The high clay content of these soils will retain a fair amount of moisture at tensions greater than
what is normally available to plants. Silviculturai practices that conserve soil moisture can result
in better growth and survival for regeneration.
Unsurfaced roads and skid trails may become impassable when wet.
•
Soils Description Report -West EIk Mine
December 1994 WESTEC 28
