U
Mountain Coal Company
West Elk Mine
Exhibit 27
Characteristics of West Elk Mine Soil Mapping Units
D. .4rgic Lithic Crvoborolls.
1. Loamy. mixed.
(Gilispie Series)
Extent and Major Areas of Occurrence - Mapping unit number X6 occurs extensively
throughout most of the area at elevations above 7,800 reet. It is the cold counterpart of
mapping unit number 6 of lower elevations.
Characteristic Tooograohv - Topography for mapping unit number X6 is the same as
that of mapping unit number 6.
P~sical Properties - The soils of mapping unit number X6 have the same physical
properties as the soils in mapping unit number 6.
Chemical Properties and Natural Fertility -The soils of mapping unit number X6 have
the same chemical properties and natural fertility description as the soils in mapping unit
number 6; however, laboratory values vary slightly.
• Mapping Unit Number 16 - Moderately deep (20 to 40 inches to bedrock) and deep
(more than 40 inches to bedrock), light colored, medium to moderately fine textured (18
to 35 percent clay), well developed soils having mature soil horizonation including
horizons of silicate clay accumulation (B2t horizons) and horizons of secondary carbonate
accumulation occurring in parts of the study area where the mean summer soil
temperature (June. July, and August mean temperature measured at 20 inches) is 59°F
or warmer.
Classification of Major Components -The components listed below comprise the major
part of the mapping unit:
A. Ustollic Haplargids (Brown Soils).
1. Fine-loamy, mixed, mesic.
(Cushman Series)
(Fort Collins Series)
(Pugsley Series)
(Olney Series)
B.
