EDIT 27
MOUNTAIN COAL COMPANY
West Elk Mine
F.XRCUITVE SUMMARY
Mapping Units
Twenty-three mapping units were originally identified in the West Elk Mine Study Area during ~ ~r
the original 1976 soil survey. Due to changes in mapping unit description and nomenclature in
the soil surveys from 1976 to 1994, soil map units, associations, complexes, and series may
. have different designations. In order to correlate the various map units and their names and
characteristics through the intervening years since the original 1976 soil survey, the following
Exhibit 22 table was created. This table identifies the original map units from 1976, the
disturbed area map units from 1980, and the current designations for map units and soil series
as they exist today. This Exhibit 22 table cross-references the various names from 1976, 1980,
and current designations agreed to by the Soil Conservation Service (now the Natural Resources
Conservation Service) and the U.S. Forest Service. SCS nomenclature has been historically
applied to private lands and public ]ands not administered by the U.S. Forest Service. T'he U.S.
Forest Service has been responsible for mapping and delineating soils on public lands they
administer.
