No field evidence of deficiencies in essential plant nutrients or trace elements was noted; however, the soil
• anah•sis indicated a borderline phosphorus deficienry (sec Exhibit 26). Temporary deficiencies of nitrogen
may occur in early spring months because these soils occur above 7,800 feet and soil temperatures warm
slrnvly. This is a common phenomenon in many soils of high elevation and is temporary. Reclamation
procedures may require supplemental nitrogen and phosphorus to insure vigorous seedling growth in the
early spring months.
Mannino Unit Number 26 - Moderately deep (20 to 40 inches to bedrock) and deep (more than 40
tnchcs to bedrock), dark colored, medium to moderately tine textured (]8 to 35 percent clay), soils having
immature soil horizonations consisting of darkened surface horizons (A horizons) and in places brighter
colored subsurface (B2 horizons) of weak to moderate structure, occurring in parts of the study area where
the mean summer soil temperature (June, July, and August mean temperature measured at 20 inches) is
59°F or warmer.
Classification of Maior Components -The components listed below comprise the major part of the
mapping unit:
A. Pachic Haplustoll (Chesnut Regosol).
I. Fine-loamy, mixed, mesic.
(Series unidentified)
B. Torriorthentic Haplustoll (Chesnut Rcgosol).
1. Fine-loamy, mixed, mesic.
(Series unidentified)
C. Aridic Haplustoll (Chesnut Regosol).
• 1. Fine-loamy, mixed, mesic.
(Series unidcntifed)
D. Pachic Haploboroll (Chcrnozcmic Regosol).
t. Fine-loamy, mixed.
(Shawa Scrics)
E. Torriorthentic Haploboroll.
1. Fine-loamy, mixed.
(Series unidentified)
Extent and Maior Areas of Occurrence - Mapping unit number 26 includes a moderately large acreage in
[hc mine area. It occurs in largest acreage on the tloodplains of 1\4innesota Creek, the Dry Fork of
Minnesota Creek, the East Fork of Minnesota Creek, and their major tributaries.
Characteristic Tonoeranhv - Soils of this mapping unit occur on gently to moderately sloping floodplains
and concave drainage channels. Slopes range from less than one percent to about 20 percent.
Physical Properties - The soils of mapping unit number 26 are immature, normally having thick dark
surface horizons (A horizons) with good granular structure. The dark horizons extend for 30 or more
inches, have a subangular blocky primary structure, and also have a good granular secondary structure.
These soils can be handled over a moderate range of soil conditions without serious loss of favorable
pM~sical properties; however, they can become paddled if handled when wet or compacted if continuously
traversed by heavy machinery.
•
