iii iiiiiuiiiiiiiii
RE~~9w~~®
June 18, 1981
Mined Land Reclamation Board
1313 Sherman Street - Room 423
Denver, CO 80203
J f !'~ ? : 1931
Co~oNgNa1~AA~D RECiAP~tATION
ct P.a(ural Res~~~,ccs
Dear Sirs:
I oppose United Sanci & Gravels petition for a gravel pit three miles
Southwest of DeBequca for the following reasons:
1. An existing gravel pit is situated about one half mile from
the proposed site. The existing one is in use now and should
have sufficient capacity to serve the needs of the area for
some time.
2. The nearby x-iver is a nesting area for several endangered or
protected species including Bald Eagles and Blue Heron. Ducks
and geese also nest on the river. I see no good reason why
their habitat need be disrupted further.
3. I own property about 1 mile NorthEast of the proposed site and
I intend to make my home there. I do not care much for the
idea of two gravel pits, perhaps two crushing operations that
near my place.
4. Once the material is mined and/or crushed it must be trans-
ported. When the new I-70 is complete the nearest exchange will
be near DeBeque. That means perhaps two groups of trucks would
roar up and down what otherwise would be a quiet frontage road.
It is likely that the school bus will drop my kids off on the
frontage road. I certainly do not like the idea of my kids and
large trucks being in the same place at the same time.
5. If this permit is approved, the value of my property, for the
usage I intended, will be lost. I feel my only recourse will
be to apply for a gravel pit permit myself. (The gravel on my
land is worth about $500,000.00). Assuming my petition would
also be approved (How could you turn me down?) other nearby
landowners would follow. Before long this problem could become
a nighmare.
I think the time is ;st hand to stop and plan this type of development
very carefully.
Sincerely,
F~~ ~~~.
Mark Bennett
1301 I-70
