There is a potential for harm to wildlife that might drink from the pond. The elevated selenium and high
pH could cause problems. In addition, aquatic birds -ducks, for instance -that alight on the water could
suffer ill effects due to contact with the high pH water.
Recommendations:
Based on the above, I would recommend the following.
1. Conduct frequent monitoring for the following pazameters:
a. Se
b. pH
c. CI
d. SOa
e. TDS
f. Tl*
*Tl was requested but not analyzed. Tl appeazed on initial CKD leach tests, and is a monitoring
pazameter and should continue to be monitored.
As discussed with the Operator, sampling analyses should take place every other week until the
problem is resolved.
2. Sample the neazest down-gradient wells for the above-cited parameters. If any appear elevated,
the operator should develop a plan to define the extent of contamination in the groundwater and
control or mitigate the problem.
3. Sample the A-Pit.
4. Conduct sampling frequently until situation stabilizes.
5. Initiate remedial action.
In addition, I would recommend that the Operator re-assess the monitoring and compliance points, and
determine specifically whether A-Pit is truly down-gradient from C-Pit.
