• 2.05.6(6) <br />some perched water systems, the consequences of mining on the <br />hydrologic balance, existing water resources, and water rights will <br />be minimal and probably non-existent. <br />Roads: Several jeep roads pass over the area to be mined in the <br />No. 3 Mine. These roads are only used occasionally by the land <br />owners, deer hunters or local four wheel drive enthusiasts. <br />Subsidence may cause cracks to form in the roads. The cracks may <br />heal naturally or they may need to be filled in with the use of a <br />small dozer or backhoe. <br />Coal Seams: The Bear No. 3 Mine operation involves recovery of <br />coal from the C and B-Seams. Two coal seams, the E and F-Seams are <br />present above the C-Seam. Because of the distance between the C- <br />Seam and the upper two seams, the Operator does not anticipate any <br />significant effect on the recovery of the coal resources above the <br />C-Seam. <br />The E and F-Seams range from 180 to 410 feet above the C-Seam. The <br />large parting should allow later extraction of the upper seams with <br />• only a slight increase in mining costs due to subsidence. A <br />massive sandstone structure located between the C-Seam and E-Seam <br />should contribute to a natural bridging or uniform areal type <br />subsidence between the seams. <br />New Mine Plan, B-Seam, West Area <br />The new mine plan proposed for the Bear No. 3 Mine should not <br />adversely effect the surface above or adjacent to the site beyond <br />any similar effects experienced in the previously mined areas on <br />the site. It should be possible to drive mains, sub-mains and <br />develop room-and-pillar panels, anywhere in the new mine plan area <br />without any noticeable surface subsidence. However, pillar <br />extraction during retreat from the mine panels will produce <br />sufficient tensile strain in the overburden for measurable surface <br />subsidence to occur. <br />Two site specific reports (Rocky Mountain Geotechnical, Inc. (RMG) <br />1986 and Geowest (GW) 1989 were previously prepared to review the <br />Bear No. 3 Mine plans. The RMG report reviewed the C-Seam Mine <br />Plan. Its main purpose was to evaluate the potential effect the C- <br />• Seam mining would have on landslides adjacent to the mine. The GW <br />2.05-57 Rev. 11-30-93 <br />
