Dept. of IJatural Resources <br />The general location of Montrose County's gravel pits not <br />located in the Uncompahgre River have several characteristics <br />in common. They are all on mesas or sides of valleys with <br />slopes away from the sites to be mined. These pit locations <br />do not have water delivery structures available, nor have they <br />a legal water right as a part of their ownership. All plant <br />life on these sites is native and is very drought x•esistant. <br />Depth to bedrock or mancos shale is alwa}'s fairly shallow. <br />Topsoil <br />Topsoil at these pits is nearly non-existent. Whatever <br />topsoil is available will be stockpiled at a location on each <br />pit where they care remain until reclamation takes place. In <br />those pits where mining has begun, stockpiled topsoil will <br />remain in its present location. Once this has been accomplished, <br />efforts at stabilizing these stockpiles of topsoil will proceed. <br />water <br />All of these pits have no surface man-made water delivery <br />ur• spreader dike systems at the pit location or near the pit. <br />Further, there is no subsurface water anticipated in those <br />pits to be opened or those pits mined in the past. Annual <br />precipitation is less than 9 inches each year. Rainfall is <br />quickly absorbed through the gravel formations to the bedrock <br />or shale formations below. Dams, siltation structures, and <br />other water control facilities to handle surface or ground <br />water are not planned during the reclamation process. <br />Wildlife <br />The wildlife evaluation for each site from the fish and <br />game has indicated little to no impact on area wildlife. <br />Final Reclama <br />Grading - Upon cessation of gravel extraction activities <br />in the pit, the final topography of the site will <br />be near level except where the pit floor approaches <br />the surrounding un-mined area. All slopes will be <br />graded to at least a '3:1 ratio. (Horizontal to <br />vertical ratio). Stockpiled topsoil will be <br />
