STATE OF COLORADO
BIII Owens, Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
DIVISION OF WILDLIFE
AN EQUAL OPPORTUNfrV EMPLOYER
Bruce McCloskey, Acting Director
solo Broadway
Derner, Colorado 80216
Telephone: (303) 297-1192
Thomas A. Logue
Land Development Consultant
537 Fruitwood Drive
Grand Junction, CO 81504
Deaz Tom,
April 1, 2004
For ~Idlife-
ForPeople
This letter is in regazd to your letter requesting comment on the proposed Cole Gravel Pit. The Colorado
Division of Wildlife comments were prepazed by Lyle Sidener.
Our concerns aze as follows:
• Fencing should remain the same, or if modified should be wildlife "fiiendly".
• Seed mix can be modified to include species recommended by NRCS. More forbs to accommodate pronghorn
known to use the azea would be beneficial. Cicer Milkvetch would be one to include.
• Topsoil stored too long, or in piles too deep can become sterilized and hamper revegetation efforts. The
proposed "phasing" of the mining should accommodate this.
• Reclaimed slopes should be no greater than the indicated 3:1 to prevent increased erosion and to ensure the
revegetation effort.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment of the wildlife related concerns to your project. If I can be of further
assistance please don't hesitate to contact Lyle Sidener (DWM) at 970-255-6115.
Sincerely,
cc: John Smeltzer
Ron Velazde
Lyle Sidener
File
~~-L~*jA
Dean Riggs
Area Wildlife Manager
Grand Junction Area
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Russell George, Exeafive DirecTOr
W ILDLIFE COMMISSION, Philip James, Chair.
