Appendix H Page 2
C2tTiiQ~ MxC~ ~SS.~~"C~X~~S
• CONSULTING GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERS AND MATERIAL TESTING
J.E. Stover and Associates
2768 Compass Drive Suite 101
Grand Junction, Colorado 81506
Attention: Mr. Jim Stover, P.E.
Subject: Laboratory Test Results for
McClain Canyon Mine near
Loma, Colorado
Mr. Stover:
November 28, 2001
PN: M01246MT
This letter presents the results of the laboratory tests performed
for your McClain Canyon Mine project. The laboratory tests were
conducted on a coal gob sample delivered to our laboratory on October
17, 2001. The laboratory tests consisted of a moisture content-dry
density relationship test and a remolded triaxial compression strength
• test.
Moisture content-dry density relationship test was conducted on the
coal gob sample delivered to our laboratory. The moisture content-dry
density relationship test was conducted in accordance with ASTM Test
Method D698. The results of the moisture content-dry density
relationship tests are presented on Figure 1. The moisture content-
' dry density relationship test indicated an optimum moisture content of
17.0 percent and a maximum dry density of 82.0 pounds per cubic foot
for the sample tested.
Triaxial compression strength properties of a remolded sample was
evaluated in general accordance with testing procedures defined by
ASTM Test Method D2850. The sample for the triaxial compression
strength test was remolded to about 90 percent of the maximum dry
density as determined by the moisture content-dry density relationship
test. A consolidated drained test was performed o~ the remolded
sample tested. During the consolidated drained tes= the sample was
allowed to consolidate prior to testing the sample to failure. The
test was performed using a strain controlled triaxial compression
testing machine. The confining pressures used and the type test were
as directed by Mr. Jim Stover, P.E. The triaxial compression strength
test results are presented on Figure 2. The triaxial compression
strength test indicates an internal angle of friction of about 33
• degrees and a cohesion of about 3 pounds per squar=_ inch.
F. o. eox a9e9 r. o. eox coos 2i1 eooo DR.
GRAND JUNCTION, CO 51502 MONfROSE, CO !1102 DURANGO.
