A3-5 Jodero loam, 1 [0 3 percent slopes
• This deep, well drained soil is on valley bottoms and alluvial fans.
It formed in medium textured alluvium. Elevation is 7,000 to 8,000 fie[.
The average annual precipitation is 18 to 24 inches. The average annual
air temperature is 43 to 46 degrees. The average frost free season is
100 to 120 days.
Typically, the surface layer is dark grayish brown loam about 10
inches thick. The underlying layer is dark grayish brown loam stratified
with fine sandy loam about 35 inches thick. The underlying material is
dark grayish broe.m loam to a depth of 60 inches or more.
Included in this unit is about 15 percent Hesperus loam, and small
areas of Sampson Fine sandy loam. Also included are areas that have a fine
sandy loam surface.
• Permeability is moderate. Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or more.
Available water capacity is high. Surface r~inoff is slow and erosion hazard
is moderate.
This soil is used mainly for range and wildlife. Snme sma.il areas are
used for irrigated crops.
In irrigated areas the primary concerns of management are controlling
erosion by water, organic matter maintenance of the surface layer and
proper use of irrigation water. Incorporating crop residues into and onto
the surface will improve water infiltration, tilth, and control soil erosion.
Laced smoothing is needed for more uniform distribution and efficient use oC
irrigation water. Irrigation methods suitable for this soil are furrow,
corrugation and sprinklers. Corrugation irrigation is well suited to small
grains and pasture. Sprinkler irrigation is suited to most crops but because
