~~ ~ i ` ~ /e
L 1 r lac c~t b dJe~~~-
Monday, July 14, 2003
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
Leslie C. Triesch
68355 Olympus Way
Montrose, CO 81401
RECEIVED
JUL 18 2003 '~
Division ~f Minerals and Geology
t%

Re: Proposed gravel mine known as the Haldorson Sand and Gravel Mine, File No. M-2003-037
To Whom it May Concern, Good Day,
In reference to this proposed sand and gravel mine in the Spring Creek area of Montrose,
Colorado, this permit should be denied for various reasons including ,but not limited to:
1. There is a high water table in this area, there have not been adaquate ground water
assessments done to the depth that this mine proposes to excavate. There should be an
investigation done by an agency qualified to do hydrolic investigation. A number of monitoring
wells should be established throughout this parcel and around the perimiters before ground is
broken, and these wells should be monitored weekly for a year. The results of these tests should
be made public. The proposed mine site is situated in an area with a high water table, and where
runoff is likely, and the water supply of the public will be adversely affected.
2. Haldorson and Sons, tnc. has not made public the the test results that show the deposits of
overburden, gravel and that there is no groundwater. The public has never had the opportunity to
view these tests. It seems unlikely that here is no groundwater at the depths that the proposed
mine will be allowed to excavate.
3. There are over 600 private residences within a one mile radius of this proposed mine. There
are two schools, one is less than one quarter mile down the road. This is an area that is mixed
agricultural and residential, and is becoming more residential. There are lwo major subdivisions
currently being developed in this area, and more are proposed. There are serious health concerns
about the adverse affects from the dust particles, fumes and other particulate matter created by
this mine operation that would be carried by winds into the homes, schools and businesses in this
area.
4. The amended mining application that states that the area would be reclaimed as cropland is not
a viable plan. Once the overburden has been removed and the area excavated to a depth of 40
feet, the rernaining topogrophy will not be cropland, but-rather a swampy wasteland. The only way
to reclaim this area would be to refill the excavation with soil. Haldorson and Sons, Inc. has not
proposed how the excavated area would be reclaimed.
5. The dramatic loss in property values of the surrounding properties would negate what little tax
gains the county would realize from the project.
These concerns and many more should be taken into consideration before we allow
industrialization in this area to proceed. It is not in the best interest of the residents of the area, in
the tax base of the county, or the future of Montrose County development to allow large scale
mining in our agricultural and residential areas. This proposed project would compromise the
groundwater quality of the area, interfere with the quiet enjoyment of life for over 600 Montrose
County residents and needlessly jepordize the health and well being of our children. Please deny
this appplication for a gravel mine in the Spring Creek area of Montrose County.
