STATE OF COLORADO
BIII Owens, Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
DIVISION OF WILDLIFE
AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
BrUCR McCloskey, Director
8060 Broatlway
Denver, Coloratlo 80216
Telephone: (303)297-1192
October 11, 2005
G. Russell Means,
RECEI!/ED
OCT 17 2005
Diuisien of Nliumu~> ~~~~ ~:W°9Y
For ~ldlife-
For People
Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the Rimrock Exploration and Development, Inc., J
Birds mine application. This piece of land is currently composed of mostly pinion and juniper
trees. This piece of land is used by deer, elk and black beazs at vazious times during the year and
sees increased use by deer and elk in the fall and winter. Activities should be concentrated as
much as possible into a few core areas so as not to disturb wintering wildlife in the area.
Noxious weeds should be addressed on all lands disturbed in this m;n;ng operation. A noxious
weed management plan in compliance with Montrose County requirements should be developed
and implemented for all lands disturbed in this proposal. Additionally, continued monitoring of
invasive weeds should be done. One year after distl><rbance 10°~ or less of the area could contain
noxious weeds. Two years after disturbance 8% or less of the azea could contain noxious weeds
and three yeazs and later 6°k or less of the area could contain noxious weeds. Seeding should be
done with native plants species as much as possible.
The incremental and cumulative loss of open space and natural areas will, over time, significantly
degrade the overall quality of wildlife habitat in the azea.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this development. The Division of Wildlife
welcomes the chance to be involved in the development process. District Wildlife Manager Kevin
Duckett is available to help at any time with information or to answer questions you may have.
