E7QiIBIT I - SOILS INFORMATION

'The dominant soils mapping unit found on the LP-21
lease tract is Unit 3, described as "rock outcrop and very
shallow soils oY the canyons". It is the most extensive
mapping unit of the Dolores River Basin, constituting
approximately one-third of the area.
A typical landscape is characterized by the deep
sandstone canyons with steep slopes (from 25-10096) and long
narrow valleys. The dominant parent material for these soils
is sandstone with some shale and alluvium.
This mapping unit can be divided into three general

components. Rock outcrops account for about 4596 of the unit.
These are largely of sandstone, with some small-shale outcrops.
About half of the unit (49%) is in shallow (20 inches or less)
and stoney soils, generally with a light-colored, loamy sur-
face layer. Mixed alluvial soils of the Dolores and San
Miguel River bottoms account for about six percent of the
mapping unit-.- .
The following 1966 Great Groups, Subgroups, or land
types are found in this mapping unit:
Percent of
Mapping Unit
45
25
20
4
4
2
Group
Rock outcrops
Haplustolls
Torriorthents
Lithic Argiustolls
Boralfs & Cryobarolls
Torrifluvents
In most areas mapped as Unit 3 the mean annual tempera-

tore falls between 42 degrees F,and 52 degrees F, with a frost
free period oP between 100 and 160 days.
