We have concluded that
appropriate mitigation, pursuant to the Fish and Wildlife Plan for
the mine permit, would be treatment of the stands of mature oakbrush
near the mine site. This would be done on an acre treated for
and acre disturbed basis. The treatment is anything designed to
thin and cut down the mature oakbrush. This results in root
sprouting by the oakbrush, providing more forage for wildlife species
• and more grass growth for livestock, which should please the surface
owner.
The easiest way I know to cut oakbrush is to drive a dozer through
the stands with the blade about six inches off the ground. If done
during cold winter weather, the oak will snap off at the ground level.
Our local representative Jim Hicks in Steamboat Springs could direct
your people to stands which need treatment.
I hope this helps you in preparation of the Rock Castle permit.
Cordially,
• 1--
(,
Allen F.
