• Introduction
Nickens and Associates was contacted by Peabody Coal Company in
early 1986 and again in 1988 to conduct cultural resource
investigations for three areas of probable future mining
operations at the Nucla Mine. The areas investigated are
identified as Tract I, Tract II, and Tract IIA in the following
report on these investigations.
Tract I, is contained within the current Nucla Mine permit
boundary and had not previously been surveyed for cultural
resources. Anticipated operations in previously undisturbed
portions of this area necessitated the undertaking of these
studies. Mining areas 2 and 3 and the associated disturbances,
as shown on Exhibit 12-2 "Operations Plan", occur within Tract
I.
• Tracts lI and IIA are located approximately 1.5 miles southeast
of the current Nucla Mine permit area. The Tract II and IIA
study areas are currently referred to as the Nucla East Area.
The Nucla East permit area and associated disturbances are
shown on Exhibit 12-3, Operations Plan - Nucla East.

5-A-1 Revised 04/11/68
