this location. The TDS in this backfill aquifer is greater than it is downgradient in the R •
Coal at GD-2. A large decrease in TDS occurred in well GD-2 in 1998 after a small decline
in 1997. An additional sampling is needed to confirm this large decrease. The TDS in well
GE-1 increased from 800 to 1200 mg/I and was steady at this level in 1998. This increase
could be due to upgradient QR mining, but also is within natural fluctuations.
Figure B-3 also presents a group of five QR wells. Well GF-11 is an equivalent
backfill monitor well. An overall increasing trend in TDS has occurred in backfill well GF-11
over the last eleven years with short-term declining trends observed within this long
period. The maximum concentration in this backfill aquifer was greater in 1998 than
previously observed from 1994 through 1997. Concentrations in the QR aquifer are
monitored downgradient at well GF-6 and have shown no influence from the upgradient
mining. Figure B-3 also presents the TDS concentrations for QR wells GP-5 and GP-6.
Well GP-6 is upgradient of well GP-5, and, as expected, contains a slightly lower TDS than
downgradient well GP-5. The TDS in the QR aquifer in the east portion of the Trapper
Mine at well GP-1 has been fairy steady for the last several years.
Figure B-4 presents the TDS concentrations for four IaM aquifer wells. Well GF-
3 is shown with red squares and TDS values indicate a very gradual decreasing trend in
TDS in the last four years after several years of an overall increasing trend. This change in
TDS is well within the natural fluctuation in TDS in the IdM aquifer. The data for well GP-4
is presented in green on Figure B-4 and shows a very gradual declining trend in TDS
concentration for the last three years which is thought to be a natural variation. TDS
concentrations for two of the eastern IQM wells, GP-2 and GP-8, are also shown on this
figure with concentrations generally between 700 and 800 mg/I. A gradual declining trend •
3-2
