(dba Southwestern Portland Cement Company)
Dear Mr. Mount,
The City of Boulder is required to provide its citizens with safe and high-
quality drinking water. Protecting its source waters from contamination is one
of the most effective means of fulfilling that obligation.
One of the City's principle drinking water resources is provided by the
Colorado-Big Thompson project. This water is delivered to Boulder by the
Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District via the St. Vrain Feeder Canal.
Since Southwestern's proposed mine operation is very close to that canal, the
City of Boulder is concerned about any activity, including mining, which may
adversely affect the quality and quantity of the water carried by the canal.
The City's preliminary review of the Application and other readily available
technical information does not initially suggest that this project will adversely
affect Boulder's drinking water supply at this time. However, City staff will
continue to review potential impacts on its water resources and request that we
he kept informed of any changes or developments in Seuthwestern's mining
proposal.
The City of Boulder also requests to be kept informed in a timely manner of
all public meetings and hearings concerning Southwestern's application.
Please contact me at 441-3200 if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
~~ ~. ~ ~~
Robert E.
