~ ~ III IIIIIIIIIIIII III
STATE OF COLORADO
a
Roy Romer, Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
FRED R. BANTA, Director
January 4, 1988
Mr. Larry M. Reschke
Project Engineer
Snowmass Coal Company
P.O. 1354
Palisade, Colorado 81526
Re: Permit No. C-81-025, North Thompson Creek Mine, 1987 Annual Hydrologic
Report and Mine Inflows Map
Dear Mr. Reschke:
I have reviewed your 1987 Annual Hydrologic Report (AHR). The report is well
ordered and concise. The only problem noted is a discrepancy between
bi-carbonate levels for the North Thompson Creek both upstream and downstream
sections. Previous sampling shows apre-permit mean of 138.52 mg/1 of
bi-carbonate. fie 1985 data for bi-carbonate at the upstream site was 131
mg/1 and 172 mg/1 for the downstream site. The bi-carbonate levels reported
for the 1987 sampling gave all bi-carbonate levels between 2 and 3 mg/1.
I have enclosed a table of the samples and analysis in question. This
printout is from tables made in the "HC-gram" program written by Gary McIntosh
of the Office of Surface Mining. This program calculates TDS from the major
constituents given. As you can see the calculated TDS for the 1987 data is
drastically different than the laboratory analyzed TDS. I would suggest that
you check with the laboratory to determine if a reporting or an analysis error
was made in the bi-carbonate values for the samples. If the discrepancy
cannot be cleared up that way you should add carbonate back to your analysis
list to determine if the balance has swapped to carbonate. However, this
seems unlikely to have happened in this fresh water system. Most commonly
this occurs in high pH stagnant well water. Please send written notification
to the Division as soon as you find out what might be the problem with these
analysis.
:~--
If you have questions, please call.
Sincerely,
Candace M.
