February 24, 2004
NATURAL SODA, INC."
3200 County Rd. 31
Ri11e, Colorado 81650
Mr. Gregg Squire
Division of Minerals and Geology /
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
C9dZS 3-~-0~
Phone: (970) 8783674
Fax: (970) 878-5866
~~fr~~~
FEB 2 6 200y
et~1 LivisipnlIlIp/M/inerals and GeplpgY
Dear Mr. Squire, ~~
Subject: October 4, 2003 Sundry Notice and Spill Report, Chemical Composition of
Barron Liquor and Reporting Time Frame
In response to your letter dated 1-7-04, please find enclosed a copy of analytical results
from ACZ Laboratories, Inc., an outside lab, in regard to the general chazacterization of
the chemical composition of the Barron liquor at the Natural Soda, Inc. mine site. Please
be aware that the results are based on a sample dilution of 50%, therefore results should
be doubled. The sample is diluted to preserve the sample and prevent precipitation of
solids (bicarb). The "average soluble salt content" is measured in Total Dissolved Solids
or on the ACZ report as "Residue Filterable (TDS) @ 180C" and concentration was
57,000 (times two) equals 114,000 mg/1(or ppm). Because of the high concentration of
sodium bicarbonate (TDS) the spill was immediately removed from a bare subsoil area
and placed in a active mud pit designed for high TDS drilling fluids. Because no "soil"
was contaminated the subsoil was from an area already disturbed, the material was
excavated and placed in the mud pit.
NSI will report all spills, even though product produced at the NSI mine site is not toxic
or hazardous, to the Division of Minerals and Geology and the BLM within 30 days, per
BLM regulation. NSI will fax the Minerals Program Supervisor at the DMG, 303-832-
8106 with a call back number, (970- 878-3674 ext.l 1), and contact person, (Ed Baker)
within the 30-day time frame.
This letter addresses atl the questions in your letter dated January 7, 2004. If there are
any additional questions please contact me.
Si(nc~er~ely,
Lam->~
Ed Baker, REM
EHS Manager
Cc: BLM, David Luzmoor
