lI
~y _y ~ 1) ,
~/: i ~ _
//' Conserratlon In Better Land tJae
TELLER-PARK SOIL CONSERVATION DtSTR1CT
112 S OUTH BALDW IN STREET
WOODLAND PARK, COLORAD080863
To Interested Conservationists,
The attached information on seeding recommendations are forwarded to you as requested.
I have some additional comments that you may want to consider in regard to yow high
altitude planting.
Aue to cost considerations, Itypically recommend one ofthe ahemate planting mixes or
"generic mixes" many dealers stock at very reasonable prices as compared to custom
blended mixes. Typically names of some of these mixes include `~'rlces Peak" mix or
"Ffigh Altitude" mac, "Drylaad Pastwe" mac and the Idce. The local Soil Conservation
I?istrict and other retailers sell these mixes, which may contain 3 to 5 grass species but as
long as they contain some of the species listed below they would probably be acceptable,
depending on the purpose of the planting. Native seed and special mixtures usually have
to be custom blended and therefore cost much more than the "generic" mixtures.
Whey the Critical Area Planting (C.AP.) or #342 practice is recommended, it is for bare
ground or disturbed areas, at the broadcast methodlrate of seeding For C.AP. or. other
plantings where a quick or temporary ground cover is needed, add up to 8 Ibs, per acre of
annual ryegrass to the mix. At ow elevation, the ryegrass typically dies out in a year or
two. If the planting purpose is to interseed or overseed existing stands of vegetation to
provide a better cover of grass, then the C.AP_ seeding race can be cut in half. Likewise,
if a grass drr11 is used for plantings, the broadcast seeding rare can be halved. The
enclosed seeding recommendation takes these factors into account. Also, if the purpose
of planting is for pasture seeding or overseeding, and not a C.AP., then fertilizer and
mulch are usually not required.
General Purpose Plantings, including Lawn and Turfgrass Mixes
Where a low maintenance, natural cover or lawn is the goal, Arizona feswe, Mountain
brume, and of the native wheatgrass (Western or Slender) are highly recommended for any
mix but their cost may preclude their use. These species are preferable to introduced
grasses as they are locally adapted and hardy. However, introduced grasses are cheaper,
easier and quicker to establish than natives.
A~ turfgrass mix with various species such as Canada, Plains or even Kernucky
bluegrass: Hard, Red or Sheep fiescue; and a quality ryegtass should provide, at a
reasonable price, both a quick ground cover and a long term durability when properly
planted and protected. If a quick ground cover is not needed, elinrinate ryegrass from the
mix and increase the proportions of the other species.
Wet areas in a natural setting would benefit from the addition on Tmzothy, Meadow or
Smooth bromegrass; whrle drier or higher elevation areas would benefit by seeding
