' WHY SHOIILD WE WORRY ABOIIT SOIL EROSION?
ar and wind carry sod from our Cobrado land down into our
ens, lakes and ditches. This sod carries with k pollutants such az o~
' grease, chemicals, fertilizers, animal wastes and bacteria, which
aten our water Quality.
r erosion also costs the horse construction industry, local
~mment, and the homeowner untold rrullions of dollars a year.
Nature slowly wears avrey land, but human activities such az
construction increase the rate of eroson 200, even 2,000 times that
amount. When we remove vegetation or other objects that hold soil in
place, we expose it to the action of wind and water and increase its
chances of erodirg.
The bss of soil from a construction site resuhs in loss of topsoil,
minerals and nuhients, and k causes ugly cuts and gullies in the
landscape. Surface runoff and the materials it carries with it clog our
culverts, Oood channels and streams. Sometimes it destroys wildlife
and damages recreational areas such az lakes and resenroirs.
NEED MORE INFORMATION?
The Sotl Conservation Service has several publications which provide information on controlling erosion in urban areas. The
;and publication numbers are:
AIB-320 Know the Soil You Build On
AIB-325 Sediment-It's Filling Harbors, lakes and Roadside Ditches
AIB-347 Controlling Erosion on Construction Sites
PA-1029 A Conservation Plan for a Developing Area
PA-1054 Soil Surveys Can Help You
Also available m limited supply:
A Guide for Erosion and Sediment Control in Urbanizing Areas of Colorado
Soil Conservation Service field offices are listed in the
phone book under UNITED STATES GOVERIYMFNf.
