Lorennra Canvon Minr -Geology Techtica( ReOOn
•
gamma ray, caliper, micro-resistivity and density suites. Copies of the lithologic logs and elecvic
logs are included in Appendix G-1.
Boreholes BH-1 and BH-2 were located in the area of the proposed surface mine. These boreholes
were continuously cored to obtain stratigraphic, structural and geochemical data for the P3 surface
mine. Other boreholes advanced across the site since the beginning of 1996 were located in
upgradient and downgradient locations of proposed mining activities and used to monitor potential
affects to groundwater. Alluvial wells were located in side canyons and above and below
proposed disturbance areas.
Boreholes were surveyed using 16 panel locations established as ground control for
photograrnmetric mapping. GPS technology was used in the performance of the survey.
Elevations are based upon NGS benchmazk J 67, NGS Purgatoire, USGS benchmark LS 57, and
USGS benchmark LS 54. Elevations have been reported in NGVD 1929 datum to agree with
existing USGS quadrangle topographic mapping. Survey data was used to determine the dip of
the stratum. Survey data is included in Table G-1.
Physical/Geochemical Properties of Stratum
The physical properties of each stratigraphic unit within the overburden and interburden were
• determined by a laboratory utilizing the appropriate ASTM standard for texture analyses. Overall
swell factors of 25 percent aze projected based on field observation of similar mining practices in
eastern Kentucky. The use of cast blasting and dozers for earth moving operations yields little
compaction. Densities and slake durability indices from BH-1 and BH-2 were correlated with data
from active jobs in Kentucky.
Rock or core samples were obtained and chemical analysis conducted on each stratum immediately
above and below the coal seam to be mined in addition to the coal seam. Samples from boreholes
were obtained at lithologic changes and of each coal seam encountered. Prior to analysis, samples
were ground to 200 mesh. The samples were analyzed for parameters listed in Table G-2.
Methodologies for the tested parameters are also included in Table G-2.
SECTION 3 -RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Determination of Stratigraphy
Four past exploration activities have been conducted at the site prior to the 1996 work.
Exploratory drilling was conducted by John T. Boyd from 1974 to 1978. A total of 79 boreholes
were drilled across the site. Map 2.04.6-1 lists the locations of the boreholes. DH designates the
boreholes conducted during this period. Lithologic logs and electric logs are not available for all
boreholes. Available electric logs and lithologic logs are included in Appendix G-1.
•
Gcology~75/April 21, 1997 2 (revised 4/24/97)
