The Interburden is comprised of
interbedded sandstones. shales and numerous coal seams.
The sandstone beds encoun[ered in the Interburden are massive, fine Brained. well sorted with
rounded [o spherical sand grains and cross bedded with interbedded shale lenses. The deposi[ional
environmen[ is fluvial. The [hickness of [he sandstone beds range from two feet [o over 30 feet.
The total thickness of the Interburden is approximately 570 feet.
Shale beds occurring in the Interburden consist of grey to dark grey hard shales and carboniferous
soft shales with interbedded coal laminae. Shales comprise approximately 75 percen[ of the
Interburden with the coal and sandstone comprising the remaining 2~ percent.
Numerous small coal seams are located within the Interburden ranging in thickness from inches
to nearly six feet. Ivlinable seams, the N. O. J and L seams are present in portions of the permit
area. The R. Q. P. O, and O1 seams will be mined by contour opera ions.
Primero Coal
• The primero coal is located within the Lover Raton Formation. The seam ranges in thickness
from 0 to 9.3 feet. .A shale par[inB tuns in the up the seam and increases near the
mouth of Lorencito Canyon. The total thickness of the underburden is ranges up to
1.000 feet.
The sandstone beds encoun[ered in [he underburden are, fine Brained, hard ~md soh. and well
sorted. The thickness of the sandstone beds range from four feet to over 30 Ieet.
Shale beds occurring in the underburden consis[ of grey to dark Brey hard shales and carboniferous
soh shales with interbedded coal laminae. Shales comprise approximately 8~ `7/of the underburden
with [he sandstone and coal comprising approximately, 15%.
Structure
The geologic structure of the permi[ area was defined using borehole informalion as well as
. photogeologic interpretation. The photogeologic inrerpretation was used to identify fractures and
lineamen[s within the permit area.
c,. ,,,...-:.~.:•,.~::. •„~- 9 (revised 6/30'971
