Carson in Pueblo County. <br />Dear Mr. Barnhart, <br />REFER Tp <br />For ~ldlrfe- <br />For People <br />I'm responding to your letter requesting wildlife information on the above <br />referenced mining proposal. <br />I have consulted with DWM, Ruth Carlson, and with Ft. Carson Natural Resources <br />Specialist, Chris Bandy. The wildlife species of primary concern inhabiting <br />this area are Mule deer, bobcat, mountain lion and golden eagle. Numerous small <br />mammals, birds and reptiles are present as well. <br />It is my understanding that mining operations will occur only November 1st through <br />January 31st. This time frame will serve to avoid potential negative impacts to <br />nesting golden eagles nearby. <br />Apparently, no more than 9 acres will be mined at any one time. However, the <br />implication is that many more acres will be mined over a 25 year period. If so, <br />we recommend that reclamation be done concurrently such that no more than 9 acres <br />are left unreclaimed at any one time. If more than one year's work is necessary <br />to mine 9 acres, reclamation of initially disturbed acreage should take place <br />the spring following the mining activity. <br />We also recommend that pit slopes be left no steeper than a 4:1 slope. A native <br />grass seed mixture, in addition to the 100 trees per acre proposed, should be <br />used for reclaiming disturbed soils.
