GENERAL ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION
The Class II survey area is located on the western edge of Gunnison County and the eastern edge
of Delta County, Colorado neaz the town of Bowie. The following environmental infortoation
' is taken from the adjacent West Elk Mine permit application. The study area lies on the north
facing slopes of Jumbo Mountain and falls within the North Fork of the Gunnison River drainage
' basin. Average annual precipitation along the North Fork of the Gunnison River is
approximately 10", most of which falls as snow. The majority of the azea is covered with mixed
tall (1 m - 3 m) shrub vegetation consisting mainly of Gambel oak (auercus gambelii) and
Saskatoon serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia). Aspen, dry meadows, and Douglas fir also aze
found in the study azea. Currently the area is used for grazing by domestic livestock and deer
and elk. Big game hunting does occur in the azea.
The north slope of Jumbo Mountain contains many flowing springs, some with associated man-
made ponds. Slope ranges from 0 to 60 percent in the study azea. Elevations range from 6800'
' to 8120'. Soil mapping units have been described as Absazokee-Work Loams (6 to 25 percent
slopes), Fughes Loams (15 to 65 percent slopes), Fughes-Aurecanti Stony Loam (10 to 40
percent slopes), and Torriorthents-Rock Outcrop, Sandstone.

h
J

1
r
r',
J
