GENERAL REVEGETATION NOTES
~ Time of Seeding: Seeding would be most successful on this site if done between late
October and mid-March. The best time for seeding is probably between mid-November and
mid-February. Seeding at this time allows freeze-thaw cycles to bury the seed and takes
advantage of late winter snows. Spring seeding (mid-March to mid-April) also could be done,
but spring seeding often produces very vigorous germination. That would be appropriate for
the Lower Zone, but could produce excessive competition in the Upper Zone. An alternative
would be to seed the Upper Zone in winter and seed the Lower Zone in spring.
Determining the amount of seed.• The seed mixtures are calculated on a pounds of pure
live seed per acre basis. The first step is to determine the number of acres to be seeded with
each mixture. This can be estimated by measuring the maps. High accuracy in this number is
not necessary as the seeding process itself is not very accurate. Because of the inaccuracy in
the seeding process it is best to add about 10% to 15% to the amount of seed determined to be
right for the area to be seeded.
The seed mixture and the amount of pure live seed should be provided to the seed
supplier. They will adjust the figwes to take into account the germination and purity of their
seed stock.
Species substitutions.• Substitutions are permissible for the Base Mixture, but all other
mixtures should not be changed or species substituted without careful consideration of the
effects. The seed mixes to be used on the invasion areas have been carefully designed to allow
for good cover without producing excessive competition, at least under normal climatic
conditions. Substituting a more vigorous species for one that will slowly develop could, in
time, drastically reduce species diversity on the site. Although the cover would still be
excellent, much of the natural character that is developing on the site could be severely
damaged or lost.
Seeding: Seeding of most of the site will need to be done by hand using a cyclone
seeder carried over the shoulder. This should be done by people who are familiar with the site
and broadcast seeding methods so the right amount of seed is dispensed. inexperienced people
typically seed too heavily -they seed like they are trying to grow a lawn.
Mulches and fertilizers: Mulches and fertilizers can be used where the Base Mixture is
applied, but no mulch or fertilizer should be applied anywhere in the Upper Zone.
