<br />Map R-3 -This map shows the areas where additional backfilling or grading is needed. <br />r~ Each labeled area will be described in later sections of this text. <br />. ; <br />Map R-4 -The Ripping or Scarification Location Map shows the portions of the site <br />where these treatments should be applied before seeding. [n the case of ripping, the ground is <br />fairly compacted and needs to be loosened to considerable depth before good vegetation can be <br />established. In the case of scarification, compaction is not so much of a problem, but the <br />surface does need to be broken and loosened before good vegetation can be established. <br />Map R-5 -This is a complex map that shows the portions of the site where the four <br />different seed mixtures should be applied. Each seed mixture is designed for use on different <br />site conditions. These will be described later. In all cases, seeding will be done by broadcast <br />methods rather than drilling. Although this means more seed must be used, in my experience, <br />broadcasting at the proper time of the year ultimately produces a more natural appearing <br />vegetation. Drilling could be done on the more level areas. But, because level areas that will <br />be seeded aze not common, it does not seem economic to bring in drilling equipment when <br />most of the site cannot be drilled due to the steepness of the slopes. It should be noted that <br />about half the site atready has good invasion that should not be physically disturbed as it would <br />,,. , be by drilling. <br />i <br />.. <br />Seed Mixtures <br />Four seed mixtures (shown on pages at the end of this report) are proposed for this site. <br />Each mixture is to be seeded in specific locations (see Map R-5). Care should be exercised not <br />to overlap the seeding areas any more than necessary. Normal expansion along the boundaries <br />will, in time, provide good blending. <br />Base Mixture: This mixture is a derivative of the original permitted seed mixture. Most <br />of the original seed mixture species are retained, but others have been added. The seeding <br />balance has been altered to reduce the amount of Smooth Brome and add other species that are <br />just as capable but do not exhibit the extremely competitive character of Smooth Brome. <br />Smooth Brome not only grows vigorously, but often crowds out other species. It also exhibits <br />allelopathic (chemical competition) capabilities that retards the germination of other seeds. <br />This mixture should be broadcast at a high rate of about 80 to 90 live seeds per square foot. <br />1 <br />Deer Creek Quarry Rehabilitation June 1994 Page 6 <br />
