INTRODUCTION: Western Mobile has requested a preliminary rehabilitation plan for their
Deer Creek Quarry, located in Deer Creek Canyon in southern Jefferson County, Colorado.
This operation is permitted, but was not mined to the full extent described in the permit. No
'; ~ further mining is anticipated at this operation by Western Mobile. Therefore, they need to
reclaim the site in its current condition.
The philosophy guiding this preliminary plan involves at least three main
considerations:
1. An examination of the current condition of the site and a description of [he various
reclamation approaches that could be used.
2. To leave the site in a condition that meets the requirements of the Mined Land
Reclamation Board, bui does not preclude further mining by another operator if the landowner
desired to lease it to someone else.
3. To follow, as much as possible, the existing permitted plan to avoid, if possible, an
amendment process. The intent is to gain approval for the rehabiliation plan as a technical
revision to the permit instead of an amendment.
i DATA COLLECTION METHODS
Two inspections of the site were conducted while preparing this plan. One inspection
was with company officials on May 20, 1994. A second inspection, by myself, was conducted
on June 3, 1994. The first inspection provided an overview of the site, a general assessment of
the condition, with discussions of approaches and history. The second inspection was more
intensive and built upon the overview gained in the fast inspection. The second inspection
made a more thorough examination of the vegetation on the site, made various measurements,
and examined lands that may require additional earthwork.
Once the data was collected, an aerial photograph, taken on June 20, 1991, was used to
prepare a map of the site. This map is a plan view and is not scaled. Measurements of various
on site features identifiable on the photograph allowed the calculation of an approximate scale.
The map was prepared by tracing various features identified on the photograph. These features
were primarily delineated by tonal variations on the photograph and knowledge of the site
acquired during the inspections. A set of color prim taken on May 20 were also available for
reference during the mapping process.
Deer Creek Quarry Rehabilitation June 7994 Page 1
