• Exhibi[ D-2
O Unitetl States Soii USDA Service Center
~~ Department of Conservation 248 Dozier .Avenue
Apncuiture Service Canon City, CO 81212
spo)ect: Soils Evaluation; C 8 C Sand Red Pock Quarry Date: peril 2, a985
ro: Don Rapp
8730 W. Mountain View Lane
Littleton, Colorado 80125
The areo'Githin the boundaries of the subject parcel consists of the exposed
bedrock high wall and various spoil materials remaining from a previous
operation. These waste materials were deposited at the mouth of the canyon
containing the quarry.
The materials deposited at the mouth are in the form of a long, narrow series
of piles oriented lenghtwise with the large canyon the quarried canyon is a
tributary of. The tops of the piles were flattened in most parts. Adjacent
to these piles and further from the quarry wall is a relatively flat area
consisting of waste materials spread over the large canyon floor.
The entire area is essentially devoid of vegetation. This is apparently
due largely to the poor suitability of the spoil materials as a medium for
plant growth. The materials are variable, and the extent of any one type
of material is difficult to estimate.
Several materials were observed. The most common material is a light sandy
loam with 60 percent or more pebbles. The available water capacity of this
soil is only about ~ inch per foot of material and is therefore drouthy and
poor medium for plant grolath. Establishment of plants in this material would
be particularly difficult, as the present lack of vegetation indicates.
Another sample observed is a light loam with 60 percent rock fragments. Rock
fragments in this sample area included large stones and boulders. .Available
water capacity of this material is only slightly better than that of the one
mentioned above.
The drouthiness of the materials is the key limitation. Other soil properties
are adequate. The pH of both samples mentioned above is about 8.0 Both samples
are calcareous.
As I mentioned to you at the site, the head of the small gully just outside of
the south boundary should be treated to prevent further head cutting back on
to C $ C property.
/6911.
