n
S
106 - Prieta Variant - Rock Outcrop complex, 10 to 40 percent
slopes.
This map unit is on steep sideslopes. It is comprised
of about 50 percent Prieta Variant soils and 35 percent Rock
Outcrop. The Prieta Variant soil is shallow, clayey, and
well-drained. It developed from pockets of loess, colluvial
and alluvial derived from sandstone and shale. Small areas
of shallow loamy-skeletal and loamy Torriorthents were
included in mapping. Torriorthents soils are less developed.
These soils occupy less than 15 percent of the mapping unit.
In a typical profile, the surface layer is light brownish
gray channery loam about 2 inches thick. The upper subsoil
• is grayish brown very channery clay loam bout 6 inches thick.
The lower subsoil is grayish brown very channery clay about
6 inches thick and is underlain with shale at a depth of
14 inches.
The Prieta Variant soil has moderately slow permeability
and medium runoff. The erosion hazard is moderate. Available
water holding capacity is low. Effective rooting depth is
10 to 20 inches.
This soil is used for livestock grazing and wildlife
habitat. The vegetation is primarily blue grama, galleta,
western wheatgrass with scattered pinyon-juniper.
