i10 - Sanchez stony sandy loam - Rock Outcrop complex, very
3teeP•
This map unit is on steep sideslopes, primarily with
south or west exposure. The Sanchez soil is shallow and
well-drained. It formed from sandstone with some interbedded
siltstone and shale. Sanchez soil makes up about 50 percent
of. mapping unit and Rock Outcrop comprises about 35 percent
of the area. Included in mapping are bands of Rombo stony
clay loam where shale occurs between the shandstone layers.
Also included are small pockets of shallow, skeletal
Torriorthents. These inclusions comprise about 15 percent
of the area.
• Typically the Sanchez surface soil is about 6 inches
thick and consists of two stony sandy loam layers. The upper '
3 inches has higher organic matter and is brown with the
lower 3 inches being pale brown. The subsoil is yellowish
brown very stony loam 8 inches thick underlain at 15 inches
by sandstone bedrock.
Permeability is moderately rapid. The available water
capacity is very low but does penetrate into deep cracks
in the bedrock and concentrate in pockets of deep soil. Runoff
is rapid on these slopes but erosion is slight due to
extensive rock outcrop and vegetative cover.
This unit is used for livestock grazing or wildlife
• habitat. Much of the area is rather inaccessible and value
