• 1.U INTRODUCTION
The Nucla Mine located in Montrose County, Colorado, about 2.5 miles
northwest of the town of Nucla, was surface mined from the Wild-1960's
until 1983. A baseline vegetation study completed in 1979 identified
and mapped seven native, agricultural and disturbed vegetation units on
the 106 acre affected area. In tfris study, quantitative data on
vegetation cover, production and density were collected on the grassland
and upland sagebrush units, the most extensive native vegetation types.
Reference areas were also established and sampled at the same time.
Mining activities are now anticipated to resume at the Nucla Mine in
_ late 1986/early 1987 in several locations within the permit area. One
location, variously referred tc as the Scraper Pit area (E}NE; Sec 36
R16W T47P; and SWyNW; Sec 31 R15W 147N) was not sampled during the 1979
baseline vegetation study. The objective of this study was to
quantitatively sample this unsampled area per requirements for a
• revision tv the existing Nucla permit. Thais vegetation study resulted
in the collection of quantitative data on vegetation cover, production
and density iri 15.5 acres of the upland sagebrush affected area as well
as in the 6.0 acre upland sagebrush reference area.
r~
i
