Black sagebrush, the dominant plant, has a uniform distribution
throughout the vegetation type and provides a cover of 7.2 percent.
Numerous other shrubs including mountain big sagebrush (Artemisia
tridentata ssp. vaseyana) (0.3 percent) are locally abundant, but all
have a low cover. Snakeweed (Gutierrezia sarothrae), rubber rabbitbrush
(Chrysothamnus nauseosus), corymbed wildbuckwheat (Eriogonum
corymbosum), respectively, provide a cover of 1.1, 0.8 and 0.3 percent.
Shrubs infrequent in the vegetation type include fourwing saltbush
(Atriplex canescens), Mormon tea (E hedra viridis), and winterfat
(Krascheninnikovia Janata).
Utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma) 12-15 feet tall and up to 18 inches
in diameter occur throughout the vegetation type on rock outcrops and
shallow soil habitats. Utah juniper are infrequently present but
because of their size provide a cover of 5.1 percent. Pinyon pine
(Pinus edulis) occur in the same habitats but, because of their
sparsity, provide only 0.5 percent cover.
Numerous succulents occur as isolated individuals or form small patches
amid the open sagebrush area. However, only plains pricklypear (Opuntia
polyacantha) was abundant enough, 0.6 percent, to be represented in the
cover. Less common succulents include ball cactus (Coryphantha
vivipara), Datil yucca (Yucca baccata), and hedgehog cactus
(Echinocereus triglochidiatus).
Indian ricegrass (Oryzopsis hymenoides) and galleta (Hilaria jamesii)
- each occur throughout the vegetation type and. each has a cover of 2.8
percent. However, needlegrass (Stipa comata and S. neomexicana) (very
similar species which could not be easily separated in the field) are
locally abundant on some ridgetops and provide a combined cover of 5.2
percent. Blue grams (Bouteloua gracilis), present with a cover of 0.9
percent, was occasionally present in small patches. Other perennial
grasses present include: red threeawn (Aristida longiseta), meadow
fescue (Festuca pratensis), Sandberg bluegrass (Poa secunda), and
• longleaf squirreltail (Sitanion longifolium).
7
4k ..Y•'rs.XU<'[~'.'" ,,..< ~ ~:,. .:.. _.. ~_. ...ir:'. .:..... _~.... ,.,.p~+. i'}.. ...-:.t"c~,.::' i_-.~...+:1si:::.+;+'~KF*wN :u~
