• MANACEPIE~T RECOMMENDA'I'IO\S
During the course of the buffer zone inspection, one site was
identified. The site (5MF465) consists of rock art and rock
shelters all on one outcrop of sandstone. The sandstone is
eroding and exfoliating rather quickly. Ldater has eroded honey-
comb like poc':ets on portions of the rock face and the edges of
the rock is extremely crumbly. Because of the nature of the
erosion and weathering, the rock art may not be more than a
hundred years old.
From previous surveys done within the Axial Basin, occupation
of the area has been for at least 5,000 years, however the density
of occupation has not been determinable (Lischka 1975). Rock
art in the area has been found at Duffy Rock Shelter but the
styles of art between 5MF465 and Duffy are dissimilar and hasn't
• shed any more light on the age of the pictographs.
Recommendations for site .5MF465 are based on significance, re-
search potential and the effects of impact. 5MF465 is considered
potentially eligible to the NRHP due to p:-obable depth of rock
shelter floors, possibly prehistoric art, artistic impression
style, and the lack of similar sites. In anticipation of pos-
sible stipulations by the Office of Surface Mining, site 5MF465
should not be impacted without further work being done for a
full determination of eligibility to the nRHP. If blasting will
be done near the site, then a sequencing of blasting could be ar-
ranged so as to minimize potential impact or to avoid any impact
at a11. Therefore, the site should be protected from any impact
by avoidance of any disturbance. If impact is foreseen it will
be necessary to review what will happen to the site and possibly
make further recommendations.
n
U
12
