MEIHODS
Sampling design and methods of data collection, analysis and presentation
were based on informatics and guidelines provided by the Office of
Surface Mining's (OSM) Denver Office. These guidelines are presently best
summarized in the 1979 editios of Wycmting Department of Environmental
Quality (DEQ) Guideline #5, "Wildlife".

A ttnrough vehicle and on-foot reconnaissance of the study area took place
during early May, 1979. The purposes of the field reconnaissance were
as follows:
1. Determine the number and variety of habitat types requiring sampling

2. Identify, establish, and oP+*~*+P*+tly mark sample locations in the field
for: •
a. Small mammal census transacts
b. Avian census transacts
c. Mammalian predator survey route
d. Browse utilization study sites
An additional purpose of the field reconnaissance was to identify and map
areas that appeared to be critical to wildlife such as potential raptor
nesting sites, waterfowl and game bird reproduction sites, elk calving
grrnmds, and elk and mule deer wintering areas. It was important to identify
all sitPR that could be critical to wildlife as early iSl the baseline
program as possible so that these sites could be carefully monitored
throughout the course of the baseline study.
A review of the wildlife literature pertinent to the Seneca II study site
took plate during early May, 1979. Existing site-specific wildlife informs- •
tine was solicited from the following sources:
