Jones, District Conservationist DATE A ril 4, 1980 <br />SITUATION: You requested soil and vegetative data for use in applying for a <br />Colorado Nined Land Reclamation permit (Exhibits 16 J) for a proposed <br />gravel pit. <br />INFORMATION PROVIDED: Following are descriptions, interpretations, <br />recommendations and a map for the mine area, concerning soil and vegetative <br />data: <br />Exhibit I - Soil Information. <br />Two soil types have been mapped within [he area of the proposed gravel <br />pit, mapping units 71C and X62. <br />a) Soil unit 71C, Forelle loam, 3 to 8 percent slopes. This is a deep, <br />well drained soil occurring on upland mesas and sideslopes. The permeability <br />of the soil is moderate, with a high water holding capacity. The surface <br />layer is typically I[ inches of loam. The upper subsoil is a clay loam, <br />about 12 inches thick. The lower 5 inches of subsoil is a calcarcous <br />loam. The substratum is a loam extending to 60 inches or more. The <br />surface and upper subsoil layers are good sources of topsoil and should <br />be saved and stockpiled for later use in reclaiming [he site. The <br />surface runoff is medium, resulting in a slight erosion hazard, unless <br />the soil is significantly disturbed. <br />b) Soil unit X62, Calciorthids-Tridell complex, 6 to 50 percent slopes. <br />This mapping unit is a complex of two soil types, which are interspersed. <br />The Calciorthids portion comprises approximately 55 percent of this <br />complex. It is a moderately deep to deep, well drained, very gravelly <br />and cobbly soil. The surface layer is gravelly and/or cobbly loamy, <br />clay loams, or sandy loamy about 2 to 5 inches [hick. The underlying <br />material is a highly calcareous, very gravelly and cobbly loamy, sandy <br />loamy, or loamy sands to depths of 30 inches or more. Permeability is <br />moderately rapid to rapid, with a low available water capacity. The <br />surface runoff is medium to rapid, resulting in a medium erosion <br />hazard. <br />The Tridell portion, is a deep'a/ell, drained sail. Typically the <br />surface layer is a loam about 6 inches thick. The subsoil is clay loam, <br />5 inches thick. The lower subsoil is a calcareous gravelly, cobbly loam. <br />
