z-1
2.1 GENERAL DESCRIl'TION OF MINING OPERATION
The operation will extract coal from the Cameo Coat Seam in portions of the proposed permit area
as shown in Figure 2.1-I . The operation is conducted from a bench excavated at this coal outcrop.
Activities are conducted underground as described in Section 2.1.5 and shown in Figure 2.1-2. The
excavated bench area (1.42 acres) is designed for support activities and facilities, see Figure 2.2-2. The
mine plan details the mining proposed for this permit term as well as addressing life of mine projections for
the entire permit area.
The bench area and access was originally approved through a joint on site inspection by the USGS,
BLM and Company representatives. All facilities and structures aze confined to the disturbed and proposed
disturbed area. The initial bench excavation and access road construction that were originally approved by
the USGS and BLM constitute a major portion of the overall disturbance. Additional area in the vicinity of
the canyon mouth was approved for use for ancillary facilities such as sedimentation control structures, see
Figure 2.2-2, Additional future disturbance includes construction of a road to connect Munger Canyon and
McClane Canyon, see Section 2.2.2 and Figure 2.2-4. If additional facilities aze necessary, they wiil be
constructed only after modification and approval of this permit.
Coal waste may be generated from the operation in the form of coal fines and other material (high-
ash coaly material) scraped up from the coal yard azea. This material will be stored at the temporary pile
adjacent to the coal product stockpile. The temporary pile will not exceed its current volume which is
approximately ],350 cubic yards (1000 tons). This material will be blended and shipped with the product
when possible. A plan for permanent disposal, off site, of high-ash coaly material is currently being
formulated and will be handled as a technical revision. The technical revision addressing all applicable
provisions of 2.05.3(8), and 4.10 will be submitted no later than June 1, 2001. The operator has also
obtained approval from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to dispose of non coal rock
slope material in areas of the mine that aze no longer actively producing coal.
McClane Volume I November 30, 2001
