Box 66
Idaho Springs, CO 80452
Dear Doug,
aEFEq Tp
For [i-"ildlife-
For People
Per your request I have drafted a letter to replace the original letter outlining
potential wildlife impacts for the t•fendota Mine.
Yocr consultant Maxine Stewart and I met December 9, 1989 for an inspection of the
operation site. She explained how the mine would operate and pointed out the
perimeter boundaries of the operation. This letter will respond only to the
• operation as described to me during the site inspection. Any changes or additions
to the mine operation plan must be addressed at another time.
The P7endota Mine west of Silver Plume is utilized heavily by bighorn sheep, small
maamals and birds. Clear Creek adjacent to the site is populated by brook, snake
river cutthroat and stocked catchable (6"-12") rainbow trout. tJo threatened or
endangered species are known to inhabit the operation area.
All precautions should be undertaken to ensure the integrity of Clear Creek
remains intact. Discharge from the mine should be filtered through some type
of settling system to reduce sedimentation and heavy metal discharges.
It was indicated that a settling pond may be located near the steep slopes on
the site. To prevent accidental drowning, or if a cyanide system is utilized a
perimeter fence is recommended around the pond. To be the most effective the
fence should be of an impenetrable type at least 6 foot in height.
Bighorn sheep are particularly susceptible to respiratory ailments, I would
recommend that all measures be taken to reduce fugitive dust levels which may
cor.trfbute toward these respiratory problems. Some possible solutions would
be to mount sprayers on the conveyors unloading rock into crushers and repeated
spraying o£ the operation floor to reduce dust generated by heavy vehicles.
• -continued-
DEPA RTMEN7 OF NATURAL RESOURCES.
