The existing underground mines were first worked in the
late 1800's with intermittent mining activity continuing through
the 1980's. In 1967, permanent structures for processing ore by
heavy media concentration were erected by lease holders. The
operation of this heavy media separation plant was interrupted by
the construction of Interstate Highway 70 which destroyed the
existing tails pond. This interruption lasted for approximately
four years. After the new pond was completed, the lessee ceased
the operation due to economic factors unrelated to the Mendota
project. Between 1979 and 1981, permitted exploration activity
was performed by prospective buyers.
Underground areas to be mined are the subject of current
permitted prospecting activities. Exploration and development
will be continued as the underground mining activities come on
line. Surface mining will be limited to the "re-mining" and
processing of existing dumps in the permit area. These dumps are
remnants of previous mining operations dating back to the 1880's.
Mining of previously undisturbed surface areas will not occur.
The reclamation approach that Jack Pine mining Company proposes
for the "re-mining" of dumps is weighted more toward post mining
land use than toward preexisting mining conditions. In this
case, the preexisting mining conditions - are mining conditions,
some of which date to the late 1800's and are depicted in the
accompanying photographs. Intended post mining land use is for
commercial and industrial development. Any original topsoil
remaining under these dumps will be restored.
u
