Mountain Plover Home Page: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
.~.
~_- o
t ~ ~ MOUNTAIN -PRAIRIE REGION
Endangered Species Program
MOUNTAIN PLOVER
The mountain plover (Charadrius montanus) was proposed
for listing as a threatened species in 1999. In September
2003 the Service withdrew the listing, because new
information indicated that the threats to the species include
in the proposed listing were not as significant as earlier
believed. The Service found that declines in local populatic
numbers at specific locations are not supported by statewid
estimates throughout the range, which suggest that the
continental population has not changed significantly in the
past decade. New information made available this year froi
many State and Federai agencies indicated that occupied
black-tailed prairie dog habitat, which provides for nesting
plovers, is more abundant that previously believed. In
addition, a variety of conservation efforts initiated for
mountain plovers and other species of the high plains in
several western states benefit the mountain plover.
Federal Register Notice: Withdrawal of the Proposed Rule to List the Mountain Plover
Press Release: Service Withdraws Proposal to List the Mountain Plover as Threatened
Questions and Answers About the Withdrawal of the Proposed Rule to List the Mountain
Plover
Withdrawal Literature Cited
For more information contact:
Bob Leachman in Colorado at 970-243-2778 extension 18
Lou Hanebury in Montana at 406-247-7367
Brian Kelly in Wyoming at 307-772-2374 extension 34
Steve Anschutz in Nebraska at 308-382-6468 extension 12
Bill Gill in Kansas at 785-539-3474 extension 105
Elizabeth Sloan in New Mexico at 505-248-6909
Jeff Humphrey in Arizona at 602-242-0210
Jim Nickles in California at 916-414-6572
To provide electronic comments click here: fw6 mountainplover@fws.gov
Archived Information
This page was updated September 8, 2003.
httn://m~nntain-nra i rte. fwc vnv/mtnnhver/ 7/2R/2(IOFi
