• signed to identii~ and assess the significazices of all prehistoric and historic
cultural resources within areas slated for direct or indirect impacts from con-
struction of coal exploration drill holes, associated roads, and mine facilities.
Direct impact zones determined since the C~cK surveys include the proposed mine
pit in the N~ of Section 10, a pond at the southeast end of the pit, and an
access road (see Figure 2). Due to the small scope of each C.&K study in the
Canadian Strip Mine Extension Permit Area, r:search goals were limited and were
oriented primarily toward contributing in a meaningful way to•kovKledge of the
cultural history of the region on North Park through identification of temporal,
cultural and functional resource attributes wind interdigitation of arm such
data recovered with the cultural patterns grc:viously observed for the area.
Cultural Resource Back r,¢ ound
Orr 4 March 1980, C~dC corrlucted a literature search through the files
of the Colorado Preservation Office, the Nati~na]. Register of Historic Places,
• and the Kremmling Resource Area B7~i Office. i)ata from other cultural re-
source reports for the immediate pro,7ect vici~iity (I.ischka, et.al. 1978,
Anderson and Bleacher 1979, Anderson 1977) were also consulted.
The research revealed that no historic resources were on record for
G&SS survey areas, and on1,p one prehistoric site, 5 JA163, is partially con-
tained within the study boundaries. This site is an open lithic scatter that
vas originally recorded in 1977, was 100 surface collected, and was determined
to be "definitely not eligible for nomination to the National Register", and
"no fhrther work" was recommended (CPO 5 JA163 Site Form). In 1979, this
site was revisited by Pioneer Archaeological Consultants and "numerous flakes"
were noted on the surface, leading those surve;rors to infer some subsurface
depth for 5 JA163 and to determine that the si~:e may be eligible for NRHP nom-
ination (Anderson and Bleacher 1979:20-21, 35)~ Cursory examinations of por-
tions of the site in 1980 and 1981 by CdJC perscuuiel failed to reveal arry clear-
ly cultural materials, and NRHP nomination eligibility is still considered
questionable.
The original data collected for 5 JA163 suggests that the site served
as a game watch and lithic tool manufacturing site, with possible hunting and/
-2-
