• Introduction
In May and August 1980, and January 1981, several small project areas
of proposed coal exploration and development were intensively inventoried for
cultural resources by Gordon & Kranzuah, Inc. (C~K) at the request of Wyoming
Fuel Compar~r (d.b.a. Sigma Mining Corporation). These surveys were conducted
under the authorization of PSAP Numbers 79-CO--074 (expiration date, 5/2j80)
and 800-1J,3 (expiration date, 6/25/81) in compliance with the stipulations
of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, the National Historic Pres-
ervation Act of 1966, and Executive Ostler 11593 of 1971, pursuant to the is-
suance of coal exploration leases (BIM case file numbers C-29315 and C 30168).
As the surveys were performed to satisfy BLM regulations, the minimal
cultural evidence recorded by CdeK resulted in the submittal of BI2~! Negative
Report Forms as adequate documentation of the investigations. Since portions
of the areas surveyed by GdcK now fall within the area of the proposed Canadian
Strip Mina Extension Permit, this report is designed to bring the previously
submitted report forms into compliance with Office of Surface M;ni,16 report-
. ing guidelines and to allow for inclusion of the CdcK data in the Mining and
Reclamation Plan. This report will therefore be limited to discussions of
C&X investigations within or immediately adjacent to the areas of concern for
Mine Plan documentation, and wilt not, at the recommendation of OSM review
personnel.(Killam and Schafer, gersonal communication}, seek to duplicate
lengtt~r environmental and cultural overview data presented elsewhere in the
Mine Plan.
C3dC participation in the cultural resource inventory of the proposed
Canadian Strip Mine Extension involved the 100;6 pedestrian survey of approxi-
mately 350 acres of BIM-administered land in the Kremmling Resource Area of
the Craig District. The area, located approximatel,V eight miles east-southeast
of Walden, Colorado, has the following legal description:
TBN, R78W, SW`NW4/ NW;S'rF;, NEaSW~}, SFrgSW4, and portions of
SW4S'~ of Section 3, and MV-~ of Section 10, 6th P.M.,
Jackson County, Colorado (see Figure 1).
The surveys were undertaken in three parcels on 16 pray 1980, 27 August
1480, and 14, 15, and 20 January 1981, by E.K. Gordon, Principal Investigator,
• and S. Shea, D. Knox, and V. Keen, Staff Archaeologists. The studies were de-
-1-
