- Colorado Springs, Colorado
22 October 1977
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board
723 Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, Colorado 80203
The undersigned citizens respectfully request the Reclamation Board
to schedule a public hearing In Colorado Springs during xeek-end or evening
hours to consider our verbal objections to Castle Concrete's pending
applications to continue mining activities in our community,
Our protest x111 stress several points
1. Public documents filed by Castle Concrete in Colorado Springs
at the E1 Paso County Clerk and Recorder's Office exclude
reclamation plans from public scrutiny, These plans are stamped
"confidential",
2, Castle's actions speak louder than their xords, The company has
xrought almost total devastation at Snyder, Queen's Canyon and
Pikeview quarries; clearly evident to the casual or trained observer.
3, We request the Reclamation Board to inspect this devastation and to
review reclamation activities within the upper twelve acres at
Queen's Canyon which border on total failure after many years,*
4, Castle Conrete should be judged on almost txo decades of dismal
reclamation performance, Surety should be significantly increased
to insure adequate reclamation,
5, Mining permits should be denied until Castle submits convincing
evidence of successful reclamation efforts within a realistic
time limit,
7~-2 ~~
* see: "A Report on Queen's Canyon Quarry"
Colorado Springs Park and Recreation Department
Design and Development Division
~ovenber 1, 1974
